Enterprise Data Storage Firm, Pure Storage, announced its plan last week to acquire Portworx to improve its cloud solutions for Kubernetes and containers technology. The Portworx acquisition is valued at $370 million.
For those that are not familiar, Kubernetes is an open-source container orchestration tool designed to automate deploying, scaling, and operating containerized applications. Kubernetes was born from Google’s 15-year experience running production workloads. It is designed to grow from tens, thousands, or even millions of containers. Not familiar with containers either? Here is a great webinar that ties all of it together given by Jon Owings, Principal Field Solutions Architect, Cloud and NextGen Applications, Pure Storage, titled Enabling Containers in Enterprise IT and the Cloud.
The Portworx team led by CEO Murli Thirumale will join Pure Storage as part of the new Cloud Native Business Unit.
Portworx was founded in 2014 by Thirumale, Goutham Rao and Vinod Jayaraman based in Los Altos, CA. The company focuses on Kubernetes data services and offers its customers extensive data protection along with cloud mobility for containers running on hybrid clouds.
